Sway Gallery is proud to present a mini pop up of Kawatsura Shikki.

Kawatsura "shikki", or lacquerware, comes from a small village called Kawatsura in the Aikita region of Japan. The practice of lacquerware in Kawatsura has its origins in the 1100s. The techniques of the craft have been passed from generation to generation between artisans for 800 years.

"Urushi" originally meant resin from the lacquer tree, but has become a byword for finely manufactured lacquer products. Real Japanese urushi is 100% natural, as such all Kawatsura products are made from only natural materials. The wood base is often beech or Japanese horse chestnut.

Many of our pieces have gold dust sprinkled into the paintings in the urushi, as well as a technique called "chinkin" that embeds gold leaf into hand cut patterns on the lacquered surfaces.

Each item you see has passed through the hands of many master craftsmen and artisans and can take anywhere between 6 months to over a year to complete.
